The aromatic properties of cannabis are created by terpenes. Terpenes are molecules produced by a plant that emit a fragrance. These compounds are a main component of resin and are secreted through the resin glands of the cannabis flower. Terpenes are not exclusive to cannabis; they give fragrance to herbs, fruits, and more.

Similar to other plants, terpenes in cannabis are developed to fend off predators and entice pollinators. Many factors influence a plant’s development of terpenes, including weather, age, and farming practices.

Secreted by the same glands that produce cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, terpenes give cannabis varieties complex fragrances and flavors. Researchers have identified over 100 different terpenes in the cannabis plant; each strain contains a unique composition of terpenes.

Of the 100+ terpenes, only some are noteworthy in regards to aromatics. Some cannabis terpenes of importance are Limonene, which has a citrus aroma, Humulene, which has an earthy aroma, and Myrcene, which is has a musky, herbal aroma. The Entourage Effect

Whole plant extractions include THC, CBD, and an additional 400 or so trace compounds. It has been recently discovered that these compounds work interdependently to create what is referred to as the “entourage effect”.

The entourage effect refers to the synergistic relationship between plant compounds. In the case of cannabis, between cannabinoids and terpenes. These compounds interact with one another to produce a greater effect than the compound alone.

Cannabinoids, such as CBD, interact with endocannabinoid receptors in the body (see left). Terpenes bind to the same receptors to produce various effects. Terpenes can influence how cannabinoids interact in the body and, in addition, exert their own effects. Cannabinoids alone do not react the same in the body as cannabinoids in combination with terpenes.

The entourage effect shows that hemp is more than its cannabinoid content. Since most of the focus on cannabis was geared towards THC content, researchers are just now beginning to delve into the benefits of the entourage effect. With their varied combination of effects, terpenes have opened the door for new cannabis research.
